Modern Ruff Collar Renaissance

75 31 euro

The ruff, which was worn by men, women and children, evolved from the small fabric ruffle at the drawstring neck of the shirt or chemise. They served as changeable pieces of cloth that could themselves be laundered separately while keeping the wearer's doublet or gown from becoming soiled at the neckline. The stiffness of the garment forced upright posture, and their impracticality led them to become a symbol of wealth and status.

Ruffs were primarily made from linen cambric, stiffened with starch imported from the Low Countries. Later ruffs were also sometimes made entirely from lace. However, lace was expensive since it was a new fabric, developed in the early sixteenth century.

The size of the ruff increased as the century went on. "Ten yards is enough for the ruffs of the neck and hand" for a New Year's gift made by her ladies for Queen Elizabeth in 1565,but the discovery of starch allowed ruffs to be made wider without losing their shape. Later ruffs were separate garments that could be washed, starched, and set into elaborate figure-of-eight folds by the use of heated cone-shaped goffering irons. Ruffs were often coloured during starching, vegetable dyes were used to give the ruff a yellow, pink or mauve tint. A pale blue colour could also be obtained via the use of smalt, although Elizabeth I took against this colour and issued a royal prerogative: "Her Majesty's pleasure is that no blue starch shall be used or worn by any of her Majesty's subjects, since blue was the colour of the flag of Scotland ...

Ie Clothing

Ie Clothing

Iulia and Emilia. Or simply, IE, a fresh and original brand, started because Iulia and Emilia love traditional Romanian clothing. Maybe it’s not a coincidence that their initials are IE, a Romanian term which stands for the beautiful, handmade, traditional Romanian blouse.

Iulia Ghenea and Emilia Tudoran, the two talented designers who founded IE Clothing, made a lasting impact through their unique creations, inspired by traditional Romanian clothing. They both graduated from the National University of Arts Bucharest, having a bachelor’s degree in Fashion Strategies and Costumes. Through their astonishing collections, Iulia and Emilia offered Romanian traditions a special place on the catwalk.

IE Clothing creations succeed both in giving a new perspective to traditional clothing and preserving their authenticity. Many details are handmade, carefully hand-stitched just as the Romanian women used to do in the past when they made their pieces of clothing. Their creations can be worn day by day or at special events, guaranteeing astonishing outfits.

At first a university project, IE Clothing has become more and more popular and at present Iulia and Emilia welcome their customers into their own atelier and showroom. The two young designers are living their dream about people rediscovering the incredible beauty of traditional clothing. Through their creative eyes, the Romanian blouse preserves its authenticity but at the same time it is brought into present day. Going back to the roots is in fact a desire to remain authentic and to express one’s individuality. And this is the message that Iulia and Emilia are trying to convey in their creations. The traditional clothing with its natural materials, such as linen, wool or cotton, and with austere lines is doubled with fine embroidery and vivid colors, and thus IE Clothing creations resemble a true jewelry.
