Altița: The Shoulder Embroidery UNESCO Protects

Altița: The Shoulder Embroidery UNESCO Protects

Look at any Romanian blouse and your eye lands first on the shoulder. That richly worked panel is the altița — the most codified and the most protected part of the ie.

Where the altița sits

The altița covers the top of the sleeve at the shoulder. Below it runs a narrow horizontal band, the încreț, and beneath that the râuri — diagonal or vertical rows that stream down the arm. Together they form a grammar every region writes differently.

The 2022 UNESCO inscription

In 2022, UNESCO inscribed "the art of the traditional blouse with altiță" as intangible cultural heritage of Romania and the Republic of Moldova. It is the single strongest authority signal the ie carries — recognition that this shoulder embroidery is a living tradition worth safeguarding.

Why it matters when you buy

A genuine altița is dense, deliberate and regionally legible. Printed imitations flatten it into a picture. When the altița is truly stitched, the blouse belongs to a lineage.
